 Carol Kueffer Biography

Carol has an MFA in Dance from (TISCH) New York University and a BA in Theater with a Dance emphasis from the University of California, Santa Cruz. She was a founding member of the New York based Modern Dance company, David Dorfman Dance, and she toured internationally with the company for eleven years. Carol also danced with the New York Baroque Dance Ensemble in France. Carol’s company Carol Kueffer Dance performed at the National Dance Festival of Brazil in Bahia and at numerous theaters in New York including the Cunningham Studio, Dance Theater Workshop, Town Hall and PS 1. She has choreographed dances for students at Sonoma State University, UC Santa Cruz, and Saint Mary’s College as well as in festivals and Dance venues in the San Francisco Bay Area. Carol is a Music/Dance teacher in the Oakland Unified School District and teaches children and teens at Shawl Anderson Dance Center in Berkeley. Many aspects of my artistic practice were affected by the changes in routine that I experienced during the pandemic. Closed dance studios led me to rehearse in site specific locations such as the beach and the closed Navy Air base. Limited interactions with other dancers compelled me to create primarily solos. Teaching and dancing from my home inspired me to create movement stories in distinctive areas of my home as well as outside. These new creative endeavors piqued my interest in creating several dance films with videographer Dylan Moore. The most recent film is Passage, a homage to the changing environment of the Alameda Air and Naval Station. In April 2022, Passage was awarded Best Dance Short in the San Francisco Independent Film Festival and 3rd Place in the Student film category in Odyssey Film Festival.
